Music Magic Sky Weaver by Vania Stager

Indigenous Artist Grant 2025: Emerging Category

Music Magic Sky Weaver

This piece features a painted cedar root basket, adorned with cherry bark, dyed cherry bark, and canary grass—traditional materials from my culture’s basketry—woven into the Shambhala logo. It represents a fusion of ancestral art and the creative spirit of the festival. The work is a tribute to my grandmother, a master weaver whose teachings have shaped my life. Her influence continues to guide me, and this painting is a heartfelt homage to her and the cultural legacy she carried. I’ve included a Monarch butterfly in traditional formline design, symbolizing its epic migratory journey—mirroring how we gather at Shambhala from far and wide to celebrate art, music, and community. The background reflects the natural beauty of the Shambhala farm, evoking a deep connection to the land. This painting brings together memory, culture, and celebration—a story of transformation, gratitude, and the threads that unite us.

About the Artist

Vania Stager is from Mt. Currie BC, the home of the Lil’wat Nation. Vania began learning about artwork from her father Hereditary Chief Lapalo7 Qestíts̓a7 Allen Stager, teaching her native design form lines and portraits of Chiefs. Vania attended Emily Carr University for the Urban Access to Aboriginal Art Program in 2013, and some drawing courses at Capilano University. She also continues to learn from her elders about traditional basketry and medicines. Vania is also an award-winning singer of the Native American Music Awards for Best Historical Linguistics for her vocals on the ‘Kalan wi’ Album.

“My songs and my artwork are inspired by my wonderful culture, family, land, animals, the people and all the beauty within Lil’wat Nation, one of the 11 St̓át̓imc Nation’s Territory.I live in paradise and my culture is magic.”

"Has moment" by Rain Awakens

Indigenous Art Grant 2025: Professional Category

The phrase “HAS a Moment” is a playful invitation—yes, it’s meant to make you smile (“do you HAS a moment?”), but it’s also a call to action. This piece is a space for anyone who’s ever felt solo in a crowd, for those seeking more meaningful connections, or simply looking to share a moment with someone new. I want you to hug a stranger. Take a photo. Start a conversation. Laugh. Maybe even make a lifelong friend.

This idea was born from my own experience attending an event solo one year—I remember wishing there were a space like this to meet others, to feel welcomed without having to break the ice alone. That’s exactly what this mural is meant to offer: a place where strangers become friends.

At the center of it all is Skokuk, the owl—a guardian spirit from the Katzie First Nation, protector of the spirit realm. Their presence in this mural honors Indigenous wisdom and reminds us that even in unfamiliar spaces, we are watched over.

So, step in. Share a hug. Share a laugh. Share a moment.

About the Artist

I’m Rain Pierre (sɬə́məx), an Indigenous artist from the Katzie First Nation. In 2016, I left a successful civil engineering career after a spiritual awakening led me to pursue art. Despite traveling B.C. and earning well, I felt unfulfilled. One night, I asked the Creator for guidance, discovered spray paint art online, and created my first piece that same day. Since then, I’ve dedicated myself to inspiring others through my work. I lead interactive mural programs with communities and schools, helping people connect through creativity and encouraging them to follow their true passions.

Adam One

Performing at The Grove Stage

Adam One’s work derives from a deep understanding of form and function, and an active interest in the questions of human existence through spiritual evolution. His pieces are born from the subconscious and are extremely chaotic amalgamations of archetypal subjects and stories. Meant to be ever changing and revealing, his pieces beckon one’s mind to question the world around, and to look at everything with a new perspective. Philosophically and Spiritually, Adam finds inspiration in the symbols of Theosophy, Cosmogony, Alchemy, Hermeticism and Gnosticism. It is from this groundwork that he constructs his own view of the cosmos. Working ancient concepts into future imaginings.

iko rabit

Iko is an abstract-realist painter from Bend Oregon, sourcing inspiration from the infinite wisdom of the natural world and many years of travel.  The idea that nothing in this universe is static, and that everything is dynamic and interconnected — is a potent catalyst for the diverse rhythm of patterns, colors, textures, and composition that emerges through her creative process, through oil painting, acrylics, watercolor, and other mixed media. It is also reflective of her nomadic, and mutable life. Her subjects often include animals and their symbolism, portraits, the natural world, and more recently a deeper dive into exploring astrological archetypes and the ancient wisdom of the Zodiac as a powerful means of self-reflection and inner knowing.

Spud Ink

Hello! I'm Spud,  28 years old, and I'm a visual artist from British Columbia. Art has been a constant in my life since I was a kid, a way to explore and express. My focus these days is on painting surrealist pieces, using the bold lines and colours I can make with Posca pens and acrylic ink. While I've always created, it was in New Zealand, back in 2021, that I really started to embrace painting as a career and hope to do it full time one day. My work aims to tap into the unexpected and invite viewers to see things a little differently!
