ShambACTION! It’s time.
Take ShambACTION!
A five-day festival of 10,000 people generates waste. Period. So, how much waste is acceptable? How can we reduce our impact as individuals and as a community?
One thing is certain – it must be a collective effort.
This year, let’s put our BEST DANCE STEP FORWARD.
ShambACTION! moves the green groove, with a mandate to reduce our waste stream, promote RESPONSE-ABILITY, and to leave this family farmland respected and vital.
Reducing landfill begins with you.
It includes your campmates and everyone you meet. It includes everyone they know, and everyone they meet.
ShambACTION culminates with the feeling that we did something positive together, that we are capable of great things – on and off the dance floor.
“We the People of Shambhala” have the power to leave a legacy of Good people doing Good things.
This year, you will find ACTION STATIONS in the downtown core. Pitch in our compostable cutlery, plates and cups with all of of your food waste. Recycling and Landfill have their own containers too. As we perfect our onsite-composting program, expect to see more and more ACTION STATIONS throughout the festival grounds in the future.
Meanwhile, Leave No Trace where you dance, where you beach, where you park, where you camp. Nada, nothing, none - not one single trace! Kindly remind each other to use the ACTION STATIONS, pick up litter on the ground, refill your own water bottle and share your ideas with us for ShambACTION! We can do this. THIS IS SHAMBHALA!
We pledge to do our best too.
- All cutlery and serving containers used by food vendors are now compostable.
- We are introducing a long-awaited composting program this year (we’re excited)!
- The green water bottles sold at all vendors & drink stations are biodegradable.
- We use bio-enzymes rather than harsh chemicals in our port-a-potties.
- All toilet paper and napkins are recycled paper products.
So what’s next? Talk with your camp mates about how to reduce landfill. Do you really need toxic glow sticks? Consider alternatives, like reusable LED light sticks for your costumes. Use solar powered garden lights for your camp and el-wire for the funky touch. Create a camp LEAVE NO TRACE action plan. Bring your reusable water bottle. Bring containers to separate compost, recyclables, and landfill at your campsite.
Be creative. Be active.
Be the change you wish to see! It’s time.
What Can You Do?
Tips for Making Clean Up Easy!
- With your campmates, stand in a line at the edge of your camp.
- Put your arms out, so that your fingers just touch. The area around and in front of you is “Your Area”. Do a little dance.
- Walk forward to the other edge of your camp, picking up any litter you see in your area.
- Take your compost, recycling and landfill to an ACTION STATION.
- It’s that simple to Leave No Trace! And it’s always easier when you work together!
- Group Hug.
Simple Steps You Can Take To Reduce Waste
- Take new tents, air mattresses, etc out of the box they came in – recycle them before you arrive!
- Get rid of excessive packaging – take things like cereal and granola bars out of boxes. This will also save space in your car!
- Use el-wire for that super cool glow costume you want to make, instead of glowsticks. El-wire is reusable, flexible and versatile!
- Ditch the traditional glowsticks, and go for reusable, LED light sticks. Our goal is to phase out disposable glowsticks within 3 years.
- Go solar! There are great options for solar camp lights – decorative or more practical, they’re out there!
- Bring a reusable coffee mug.
- Bring a reusable water bottle, or better yet, a backpack with a water bladder. Less refills during a night of dancing! Plus places to store snacks for refueling.
